Petar Stoyanov is a lawyer, politician and statesman, President of the Republic of Bulgaria from January 22, 1997 to January 22, 2002. He is the first Bulgarian politician to put Bulgaria's membership of NATO and the European Union at the center of his election campaign and the first Bulgarian head of state after World War II who was not a member of the Bulgarian Communist Party.
